Delg says they’re called foulwings which seems a little on the nose to me
*facepalm* I'm not sure if this facepalm is for the name, the awful joke, or both.
It’s the forest for us, from now on.
It should've been in the first place! You knew you were being hunted from the very beginning, why didn't any of you think of STEALTH?!
no women, it seemed, rose high in the robed ranks of the Zhentarim.
It's written by Greenwood, of course they don't! The man only lets women be of high rank in Faerun if he's interested in his self inserts having relations with them.
Greenwood would later confirm that Gathlarue having very pretty female apprentices she gets very touchy-feely affectionate with is exactly what it looks like, for the record.
I'm absolutely not regretting a single word I said about Greenwood's skeeviness in the last sporking, because he seems so very determined to prove me RIGHT.
She’d been happy there—how happy, she hadn’t known until too late.
HORSESHIT. Not only wwere you so miserable you forced yourself into a mercenary group, but when you went back you found out your 'father' had deliberately treated you like shit to protect you from people WHO DIDN'T KNOW YOU EXISTED! I hate these books so much!
In Highmoon, she’d heard often of the mighty Vangerdahast—and by all accounts, he sounded less good-natured and forgiving than the far mightier Elminster she knew.
You think Elminster is good-natured and forgiving?!
Yet, I warn you never to forget this: whatever the challenge, I will keep peace in my realm, no matter the cost.
What a nice kingly way of saying 'If you keep getting my people killed I'll put you down'. Not that I blame him, since it seems like Shandril's causing a lot more splash damage than she was before.
Netheril itself wasn’t mentioned at all in Spellfire (which is itself a bit weird, since it’s a big part of the Realms’ backstory and was apparently part of Greenwood’s home campaign long before he sold the Realms to TSR), but references to it will start cropping up in the remainder of the trilogy and will become plot-relevant in book three, which is also part of why I wanted to get that spiel out of the way.
Netheril was a really big and interesting part of the backstory of Neverwinter Nights 2. Despite that game having a ...lot of problems, to put it politely, they tied Karsus' attempt for godhood into the backstory cleverly. Basically, Netheril was so powerful that other civilisations had to make magical weapons scary enough to make them back off in order to survive, and so the Illefarn Empire created a perfect guardian, a construct of nearly unmatched power and absolutely no purpose beyond the preservation of Illefarn's people. When Karsus' spell disrupted the Weave, the Guardian latched onto the Shadow Weave and became corrupted into the being known as the 'King of Shadows', and it was eventually banished to the Plane of Shadows. When the Shadovar started their first explorations into Faerun, it was released, and the plot of NWN2's main campaign is ostensibly about finding out about it and finding a way to banish it. If you fail, or take its side, it turns the lands of the former empire into basically an extension of the Shadow Realm!
Yeah I know this doesn't have much to do with Shandril's mess but it shows that at least SOMEONE working on the game was paying attention to the metaplot. Plus I just find it kinda sad that the Guardian, who was once just a very selfless man who volunteered to be turned into something utterly without ego, got corrupted as a random side effect of Karsus' being an absolute bastard.
he’s the one I’ve alluded to before who actually does have a plan and means for stealing spellfire, which automatically puts him above almost everyone else.
A semi-competant villain in a Greenwood book? I better make sure there aren't any flying pigs about!
’Tis high time, indeed … for certain folk to set down their harps and get their hands dirty. Again.
Fuck off, Elminster, the Harpers cause more trouble than they ever solve and the fact that you helped found them just makes me hate you MORE.
